Heathrow is not an island, but is part of the surrounding community. Today we take a look at Horton based “Day and Knight Bedroom Design” who are proving time and again that even in our modern industrialised age, craftsmanship is still alive and well.
Jonathan Hope is a man who is good with his hands. A member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen, after half a lifetime working with wood he can turn his skills to almost any task. However he has chosen to build his reputation on fine bespoke fitted bedroom furniture.

Whether using the most expensive oaks or modern composite materials, he is able to turn a client’s half dreamed vision into a solid reality. Jonathan is also by necessity a designer. Some clients need the support that his long experience can offer, while others have very fixed ideas. Jonathan is therefore also a man of tact and diplomacy, managing to negotiate the sometimes turbulent waters of the planning process without the customer ever becoming anxious or confused.

And what of the Heathrow connection? Aside from being a local business, Day and Knight rely on the regular deliveries of exotic materials and new design ideas that a major airport brings to a region. Heathrow airport is a hub for the introduction of styles, themes, impressions, and cultures that land on a dily basis, enriching the local landscape. Although steeped in tradition, Day and Knight are a forward looking company who agree that when it comed to quality bedrooms, the sky is the limit.

Heathrow Airport is south west of London, about 15 miles from the centre. To get there follow the M4 from Chiswick and at junction 4 follow signs to your destination terminal. Before driving a car or motorbike to London Heathrow Airport, you should check with the AA or other mapping and route service for traffic accident updates or roadworks that might affect your journey time. For more informationto help you plan a trip to the airport, visit the following website: www.theaa.com. Their onlineRoute Planner will help you to find alternative routes through traffic. You can even set it to avoid motorways or toll roads. Print out a map and directions and off you go. Alternatively use your satnav, but be aware that terminal 5 roads seem to change pretty regularly at the moment.

Heathrow has short term and long term parking areas close to the terminals. However, these are expensive so it is best to follow some simple rules.

Firstly, if you choose short term parking make sure it really is short term. Stay for more than a few hours and the parking costs add significantly to your total bill for the trip. Really not cheap at all.

Secondly, if you are staying for a few days, consider the private heathrow parking companies. They are based outside the airport perimiter, but will shuttle you in on private busses. The cost is typically 40% less than on-airport parking.

Halfway betweeen London and Windsor is Heathrow Airport, one of the world’s biggest airports .

Here are some of the finestplaces to stay close to Heathrow Airport. You could take the train into central London, but there are some really great Hotels within easy reach of the airport itself.

Royal Berkshire Ramada Plaza

10 miles west of Heathrow Airport, The Royal Berkshire Ramada Plaza is a beautiful 18th-century red brick mansion set in 15 acres of lovely old fashioned English contryside. This hotel is close to both Ascot racecourse and Windsor Great Park with its historic oak trees, deer park and royal lodges. Why not pop in to Windsor Castle for a final royal experience before your flight?

Sheraton Skyline Hotel Heathrow Hotel

Fast access to the airport combined with a bit of luxury. The Sheraton Skyline Hotel & Conference Centre has 350 of the largest bedrooms in the area.

The Holiday Inn at Brentford Lock
Cool modern hotel to the east of the airport with easy access to Kew Gardens, Syon Park and Twickenham Rugby Ground. This hotel has a particularly nice gym.

The Castle Hotel, Windsor

The Mercure Castle Hotel sits close to the entrance to Windsor Castle. Some of the rooms look out over the castle walls giving you a toally unique view to wake up to.

Holiday Inn Ariel Heathrow
The Holiday Inn has 180 rooms and is very conveniently located for the airport. They have ‘blackout’ curtains on the windsows and serious double glazing to ensure guests get a good sleep, even if jetlag means you feel like sleeping at odd hours.

Oakley Court Hotel
It is about 3 miles upstream from Windsor town centre so it takes about 20 minutes to drive here from Heathrow, but quite frankly, we think it is worth it. Oakley Court has a lovely riverside garden and the building itself is a quirky mock-gothic mansion seen in horror movies and famously was Dr Frankenfurter’s spooky house in the cult classic Rock Horror Picture Show.

Savill Court
Savill Court is a spectacular Jacobean style mansion set in 22 acres of secluded parkland close to Windsor Great Park. The drive to and from Heathrow is just about 20 minutes but you really feel like you are a world away from the fast pace of international travel. This is an excellent choice if you want to relax, enjoy being pampered and go walking in the royal park.
