Runnymede

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Just a few miles west of heathrow is Runnymede, the spot where King John signed Manga Carta, the document that enshrined in law limitations on the power of the monarch. This was England’s first foray into democracy and set the contry on a path it follows to this day.

If you want to visit Runnymede you will find a lovely broad grassy meadow on the banks of the River Thames between Windsor and Staines. On the hill to the south is an airforce memorial and an acre of land granted in perpetuity to the United States in memory of the assasination of President Kennedy.

A cafe and ample parking can be found at the upstream (Windsor) end of Runnymeade.
